Sustainability is a three-legged stool with profit, environmental and social commitment as the guiding principles. To maximize profits companies must find new ways to add value for their customers including shorter cycle times, lower costs and improved services. Profit, however, must not be at the expense of environmental responsibilities. Aside from compliance to federal and regional EPA requirements, most companies can actually save money by reducing, reusing and recycling. Social aspects include providing both responsibility and leadership for employees and the community at large.
Speaker: Tom Croteau, Partner, Media Technology Partners

Production Software Tools for Saving Time and Money

Tuesday, March 16, 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Part I, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.:
The 7 Deadly Sins of Newspaper Marketing
Business history shows that disruptive forces within any industry do not favor the established players, particularly if they refuse to refute previous business models. The key word is “refute.” It implies more than adapting to change. It requires a complete change – or disruption to our current business-as-usual. Newspapers are guilty of seven deadly sins that, if not corrected, can mean a catastrophic loss of the entire war for public trust, loyalty and democratic mission.
Speaker: Ed Efchak, Managing Partner, Customers by Design, L.L.C.

Part II, 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.:
Key Marketing Lessons Newspapers Should Have Learned But Never Did
The business sections of newspapers cover all the trends, successes and pitfalls of national and local industries as lessons for other business leaders. Ironically, most papers fail to read between their own lines to see how the lessons apply to their own situations. In this one-hour session, get an objective look at the lessons newspapers should have learned and may still have time to take to heart for surviving in the digital age.
Speaker: Rhona Bronson, Marketing Strategist, Plaza Communications & Consulting, LLC

Selling Against the Competition
Tuesday, March 16, 9:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Included will be a description of an in-depth training program on how to take market share through training and contests and how to work with mobile alerts, text to win and other programs and devices that produce a winning team.

Journalism 2010 and Beyond
Monday, March 15, 12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.
One of the most respected journalists of our time will share his message about journalism as we know it today and what we can expect in the future. Long a proponent to preserve journalism’s core mission of truthfully reporting the big issues and stories of today while exploring ways to rebuild the industry’s business model, Martin Kaiser wrestles with these issues daily both in his role locally at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and nationally with the American Society of News Editors. He will share his insight and his desire for “news literacy” – teaching citizens the value and values of newspapers.

Top Five Legal Issues for Newspapers in an Online Age
Monday, March 15, 1:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
Are the rules for online the same or different than for print? Are there new traps for unwary reporters and editors? Two First Amendment attorneys, Craig Staudenmaier and Robert Clothier, will hit the top five online legal issues facing papers. For example: When are papers liable for what’s posted online? What about internet-accessible archives? How should reporters preserve electronic information (emails, drafts, etc.)? Can papers publish Facebook photos? These issues and any others raised by attendees will be covered.
Speakers:
Robert Clothier, Partner, Fox Rothschild, LLP
Craig Staudenmaier, Partner, Nauman, Smith, Shissler

Direct from Copenhagen: Don Carli Reporting on Sustainability

Don Carli, Senior Research Fellow for the Institute for Sustainable Communications and EVP, SustainCommWorld, is reporting and blogging live from Copenhagen this week on areas not generally covered by the media.  Below is a major piece for your review on deforestation.

COPENHAGEN ON MY MIND – REDUCING DIGITAL MEDIA TREE-WASH

Most people will tell you that they care about saving our forests, but they tend to be uninformed or misinformed when it comes to knowing the causes of deforestation or some of the places being affected most significantly by land use change that kills trees, pollutes rivers and contributes to climate change. Until recently the conventional wisdom has been to demonize paper and print media as the major culprit behind “killing trees” and to idealize digital media as “green and groovy” alternative without consideration for the full backstory or life cycle footprint of either.

Pixels Don’t Grow on Trees

Paper and print media supply chains are far from being sustainable, but may be far less of a threat to forests than the “Tree-Wash” claims about how digital media saves trees or how pixels are greener than pages. “Tree-Wash” is my term for a special class of “greenwash” making false, misleading or unsupported marketing claims that ignore the causes of deforestation associated with digital media, or that fail to identify the actual trees and forests allegedly being saved or planted.

However, the Copenhagen Climate Summit and technologies developed to verify land use are likely to play a major role in changing the status quo with regard to foot-printing forests, identifying trees and the calculating the climate impacts of coal-powered IT. Continue reading

Columbia Journalism School Prizes and Programs 11-2009

Here are some prizes and continuing education programs at Columbia that I would like to alert you about.

1.   When Veterans Come Home: A Workshop for Working Journalists

The Columbia Graduate School of Journalism is collaborating with the Dart Center on Journalism and Trauma and the Carter Center Mental Health Program to offer a workshop on “When Veterans Come Home: A Workshop for Working Journalists” on Jan. 7-9, 2010 at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Ga.  The workshop will address the special challenges facing local and regional news organizations seeking to improve their coverage of critical issues facing returning veterans, with a special emphasis on journalists in communities with high concentrations of veterans or military families. Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter will be the opening speaker.

The workshop is underwritten by generous grants from the McCormick Foundation and the Carter Center Mental Health Program.  All selected participants will receive a full scholarship to cover travel, hotel and workshop registration and materials.

Application Deadline: November 20, 2009

Application Information: http://dartcenter.org/content/workshop-when-veterans-return

2. Want to Get Smarter About Your Work? Become a Punch Sulzberger News Media Executive Leadership Fellow

The Columbia School of Journalism is seeking applicants from news organization leaders for the Punch Sulzberger News Media Executive Leadership Program fourth year, which starts January 25, 2010. (See http://www.sulzbergerleadership.com)

This program springs from a simple observation:  Leaders in the news business grow as they themselves tackle their companies’ most critical business challenges. The program is offered to 20 high-ranking executives over a 12-month period. During that time, the participants learn to use strategy, innovation, and other critical approaches to undertake challenges confronting their companies. We spread classes over four sessions of 3-5 days at the Columbia campus. The program is augmented with peer learning, business advisors, specific assignments, and tailored content – all designed to achieve a project or workplace challenge that participants bring to the program.  For more information, contact Associate Dean Arlene Morgan at am494@Columbia.edu or at 212-854-5377. She can put you in touch with editors from the Providence Journal, the Christian Science Monitor, ABC, the Associated Press as well as some start-up digital media leaders who have completed this unique leadership initiative. Application  deadline is Nov. 20.

3. Seeking Entries for John H. Oakes Award for Environmental Reporting

The deadline for entries for the John H. Oakes Award has been extended to Nov. 20, 2009 and now includes original stand-alone online work and websites that accompany newsprint projects.    The winner receives a $5,000 prize and trip to New York’s Columbia Graduate School of Journalism to appear on a panel on environmental reporting issues.   The story can be a single topic or series, published between October 1, 2008 and September 30, 2009.  A series must be designated as such by the publication when it is printed. A regular column may also be submitted as a series.  An entry form and additional information are located at the Columbia Journalism School website at www.journalism.columbia.edu under Oakes Award.   For more information, contact Lisa Redd, program director, at lsr21@Columbia.edu or 212-854-6468.

Metaprinter Giveaway Winners Announced / What I Learned

A number of people have asked me to write some reflections on running The Metaprinter Giveaway this past week.

Winners:

4Gig iPodJeff Emsweller. Jeff spent 22 year in the journalism field, starting as a photographer for the Rushville (IN) Republican newspaper. At Rushville he served as sports editor, assistant editor and then was named editor of the Batesville (IN) Herald Tribune. Jeff also served as editor of the Greensburg (IN) Daily News and then as Publisher of Greensburg, Rushville and Batesville.

Jeff has won numerous state and national awards from writing, photography and layout and in 1989, he was honored to have a fire photo submitted and considered for a Pulitzer Prize. Although he did not win, he still treasures the documentation received regarding that nomination.
Jeff is presently the marketing manager for an auto body repair shop with two locations in Southeastern Indiana. “My passion remains for the newspaper industry”.

1Gig iPod - H. J. Mann. H. J. is the Vice President of Financial services sales Firethorn LLC, a Qualcomm company. H. J. has 15 years of experience in technology and business development. He has held leadership roles in leading organizations such as Acxiom, Epsilon, and DoubleClick. H. J. lives in Dallas with his wife and daughter.  Thank you Robert!  www.firethornmobile.com

$20 Amazon.com Gift CertificateMaikel Neris.  Maikel is a 27 years old Brazilian web designer and WordPress developer. Thanks for the prize!  www.maikelneris.com.br

Results:

Over the course of the 4 days we ran our giveaway there were 39 on site entries (and a total of 108 entries via twitter, linkedin, and email.  But those don’t count.  Sorry).  RSS subscriber numbers remained unchanged over the week (in a normal week it goes up by a handful) however site visits were up ~5%. Pageviews up ~10%. Pages per visit up ~5%. and Bounce rate fell ~11%.

The week wasn’t a massive success in terms of driving traffic – however that wasn’t my overall goal. The main thing that I wanted to do over the week was to add to the sense of community on the site – to have some fun – to get a few lurkers participating and to thank readers for being a part of Metaprinter. In this regard the week was a big success with many first time comments and a lot of thank you emails from readers who seemed to enjoy it.

Thanks again!  Any Ideas for the Next Giveaway?

PRINT OR DIGITAL MEDIA – WHICH IS MORE SUSTAINABLE?

THE BIG DEBATE: PRINT OR DIGITAL MEDIA – WHICH IS MORE SUSTAINABLE?

Strategic Business Leaders with answers to address The Green Media Conference

MERCER ISLAND, WA – April 29, 2009 – Which is more sustainable, physical mail or email, a magazine page or a web page, a book or an ebook? Which has the larger carbon footprint and what is the risk to a brand if their messaging says one thing and their media supply chain choices say another? Publishers, advertisers, marketers and supply chain professionals are increasingly being challenged to make decisions that address climate change and that are consistent with the principles of sustainability.

Carbon Dioxide has been ruled a pollutant dangerous to human life by the EPA, climate change legislation is pending in congress, and the leaders of 192 nations, including the US, China and India, will meet in Copenhagen this December to agree on a climate treaty to succeed the Kyoto Protocol. With an eye to the future, what efforts can be taken to measure the carbon footprints and otherwise qualify and quantify arguments for the sustainability of print and/or digital media? How To Enter:

In the comments section of this post (and you’re welcome to post your entry on your blog if you wish, but it’s not required as long as you’ve posted it here) finish this statement: “If I owned a newspaper company…”

SXSW09 The Future of News SBJ

Old Growth Media And The Future Of News

The following is a speech Steven Berlin Johnson gave yesterday at the South By Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin. Can we expect the general public to navigate the new ecosystem with the same skill and discretion?

Let’s say for the sake of argument that we can’t. Let’s say it’s just too overwhelming for the average consumer to sort through all the new voices available online, to separate fact from fiction, reporting from rumor-mongering. Let’s say they need some kind of authoritative guide, to help them find all the useful information that’s proliferating out there in the wild.

If only there were some institution that had a reputation for journalistic integrity that had a staff of trained editors and a growing audience arriving at its web site every day seeking quality information. If only…

Of course, we have thousands of these institutions. They’re called newspapers.  continue at link above

Here is the Qik video of his talk. You can read along at the link above.  The recording starts in section 2, paragraph 3, line 4 here:

or the print newspaper business: the future of news itself. Because there are really two worst case scenarios that we’re concerned about right now, and it’s important to distinguish between them. There is panic that newspapers are going to disappear as businesses. And then there’s panic that crucial information is going to disappear with them, that we’re going to suffer as culture because newspapers will no long be able to afford to generate the information we’ve relied on for so many years.

Steven is bullish on news and I like his take on the situation because it raises some new points and turns newspapers role into that of a filter.  Is he right? Who knows but hey, at least he’s thinking it through giving people ideas to knock down, manipulate or affirm.  He did give me one great idea so I fired off the email below to my local police and fire departments.  I look forward to their response.

To my township officials,

My name is Robert Ivan, I am an aberdeen-matawan local and run news media blog metaprinter.com.  I am writing to request a meeting with someone at your offices to set up an RSS feed for fire and police information.  I feel this would be a great service to our community and serve as a yardstick by which all other public service announcements will be measured.

The idea came about when I drove past the train station today to find a building had partially burned down.  Had I not driven past the building I would have known nothing about it.  It made me wonder what other crimes or disasters were occurring in my town, around my home, that I did not know about.

I hold an MA in Graphic Communications management and technology from NYU, have over 9 years experience in online media and web design, and am a member of the local chamber of commerce.  I would love to speak to someone about this.  I am not looking to profit from this enterprise, just get our community better connected as traditional media becomes increasingly less relevant.  My contact info is below.

Best,
Robert Ivan

OK, I asked him after the session.  He says that he is making the newspaper sites more interactive, and linking out to news blogs and other credible sources more.  He’s also making the news sites become aggregators (through niche sites)  for all info in their area so someone searching for info about chicago x will wind up on a tribune site.

Second Street Media Solutions Owners Matt Coen and Doug Villhard Discuss Upickem

Interview with Second Street Media Solutions Co-owners Matt Coen and Doug Villhard to learn more about their fastest growing product, Upickem, which is an online contesting platform.

RI - Simply publishing content on a website is not enough.  How does Upickem bring news sites into the internet paradigm?
MC - By virtue of the way contests work, ie. participation, we make newspaper news sites much more interactive with their target community.

RI - How do you drive user engagement? How do you build communities?
MC - The contests engage a passionate community. “cutest dog contest” for example generated 4.5 million pageviews, 6800 dog photo submissions, over 1million votes, and 15,000 registered users for The Minneapolis Star Tribune.  The users who register to participate in the contest provide the paper with their email info that can be used to drive participation in future contests. Link to day 3

Crazy day for metaprinter dot com.  At 11am I interviewed Matt Coen and Doug Villhard with Second Street, then I interviewed John Juliano and Laura Koval with Terra digital printing.  Both these interviews will be up soon.

Got sidetracked by the Reel Centric display on my way to a session.  Look at this thing.  They market their product as  “smart video advertising solutions”  so they are raffling off a Smart Car.  Did I enter the raffle?  They said I could, So I did.   All I had to do was watch a 5minute demo.  The person manning the booth said they have already made the money they spent on purchasing the Smart car 5x over.  So I am naming Reel Centric’s booth, best booth at mediaXchange 2009.

Hit the 2:45 session Link, Search, Play to learn mostly about contests and their revenue potential.  Especially as a follow up to my interview with SecondStreet. So there you have it.  Day two is in the books.

. Demographic Data & Behavioral Data sold to ad networks, data exchanges, and agency buying systems.
. He has lots of supporting data of current and past trends.
. Thinks the display ad price drop is leveling off.

Video advertising opportunities

. 67% of all internet users are viewing video ads at least once a month.
. Video ad spending will run counter to overall economic developments rising 45% in 2009 to $850million
. newspapers need to engage people already using television advertising like car dealerships.
. virtual home improvement project on Arizona Republic’s site (i can’t find it)

Cox Ohio Publishing Ray Marcano, internet general manager
Dayton Daily News Hot Topics box on front page of site being passed off as content, but really direct click ads.  The box itself is making almost $100,000 in year one.

That’s it.  Q&A is cut short, ran over time.  Too many powerpoints at the sessions.  Thank goodness Ray’s ppt. failed and he winged it for 6minutes.  Because of that it was short and to the point.  One of the better presentations so far.   The others spoke too long. I really heard nothing innovative being said about how to generate value based on filling community needs.  This statement from  audience, “what I’m not seeing is newspapers attempting to create rich media content for long term growth” #naamxc09 summed it up.

UPDATE:  2pm

Gearing up for an interview with Serra Media CEO Mark Briggs.  Here is a slideshow showcasing their premier product Newsgarden.  More on this when I get the interview.  Stay tuned.  It will be on the site as a new post ASAP.

NAA Previews Inaugural mediaXchange Conference

Premier industry gathering focuses on future business models, multiplatform strategies

Arlington, Va. – Newspaper professionals from across the country will attend the Newspaper Association of America’s first annual mediaXchange Conference March 9-11 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. The conference marks an increased focus on emerging digital infrastructure, and will allow attendees to share audience and revenue development strategies that have generated growth in print and online.

“As newspapers reinvent their business models and focus on monetizing digital content, NAA’s inaugural mediaXchange event will allow attendees to share success stories and revenue-generating ideas that are effective now and well into the future,” said NAA President and CEO John F. Sturm. “The opportunity for newspaper professionals to share audience and revenue development strategies, network with key newspaper advertising customers and listen to experts both inside and outside our industry will prove invaluable for those in attendance.”

This year’s show floor will feature 220 exhibitors that serve all facets of the industry – from production and digital platforms to advertising solutions. More than 40 of these companies will be exhibiting with NAA for the first time.

Conference Highlights:

March 9: Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com
Under Tony Hsieh’s leadership, the online show store zappos.com has grown gross merchandise sales from $1.6 million in 2000 to $840 million in 2007 by focusing relentlessly on customer service. Hsieh will share his experiences providing a culture that promotes excellence in customer service, a key component to this remarkable success story.

March 10: Future Business Models
In this session, Jim Chisholm, principal at iMedia Advisory Services, will share his findings and recommendations from a comprehensive analysis on newspaper financial models for the future. Afterwards, newspaper executives who are rethinking the traditional publishing model will share the strategies and results from product transformations at their own companies.

March 11: A Conversation with Lee Abrams
The Tribune Company over the past 12 months has moved aggressively to transform their product strategies and remake the traditional newspapers, including re-designs, shifting the editorial/advertising ratio, re-thinking content focus/presentation, launching companion tabloid products, breaking news sites and other innovations. Lee Abrams, Tribune’s chief innovation officer, has been the provocateur for many of the changes.

Full information on the conference, including programming and registration details, is available at mediaXchange.naa.org.

TOC 2009 The Future of News – Yes We Will Have News!

The Future of News – Panel discussion

If we accept that media will never return to its pre-Internet form, what lies ahead for news? How will we use current and future digital tools to craft and disseminate information? What lessons can publishers of all types learn from the news industry’s digital transition? A panel of media experts will discuss these topics and others in this forward-looking session.

Wouldn’t you know it, my recorder failed during this event.  Below is what I could jot down.  TOC will have a video up soon enough and I’ll embed it here.  Some key topics mentioned by the panel members:

Andrew Nachison (We Media)

-Everyone is media, there is no more “the” media.

Jeff Jarvis (Buzzmachine.com)

-Books could have done what Google did, linkable, searchable, etc..
-Google has better technology than any newspaper.
-An online model has yet to be invented / discovered which will support an entire news industry

Nick Bilton (The New York Times R&D Labs)

-Google and Microsoft are not content providers, they aren’t good at it.
-NYT is working on “smart content” customization technologies to help readers parse out content of interest to them.
-NYT publishes over 600 articles per day.
-All we talk about is business models, business models, business models.  Something has got to give.

Susan Mernit (People’s Software Company)

-Knight News is helping find the future.
-Some hyperlocal is working like Baristanet and WestSeattleBlog.
-trusted locals will report foreign affairs, no more costly foreign bureaus.

Matt Thompson (Reynolds Journalism Institute)

-Introduces the term “micropatronage” at least neither I nor Jeff Jarvis ever heard of it before.
-News sites must develop a community for micropatronage to work, like the examples Susan gave. Continue reading

The Coolest Gadget I Saw At TOC 2009 – Readius

The coolest gadget I saw at the 2009 O’Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing event wasn’t even on display.  It was an actual working Readius!  Back in September 2008 I interviewed Igor Smirnoff, Director of Strategic Development for PressDisplay.com on metaprinter.  In that interview he mentions the Readius and shares some pics.

When I bumped into him at TOC2009 today I told him that I was disappointed with the display by the Plastic Logic Reader (every working model had terrible vertical lines on the screens)  and I really wanted to see the Readius he mentioned and with that, Blamo!  Here it is!  within 10 seconds people started gathering around.

Above, Igor is  holding the device while cradling an iRex Tablet.  He was at the event to showcase NewspaperDirect‘s new iPhone Application and PressReader features for the iRex and Readius. Read more about that in their release. Continue reading

Ridiculously Great Panel on Mobile Technology – Davos 2009

Yesterday at Davos, Michael Arrington from TechCrunch moderating a panel on the Next Digital Experience with Chad Hurley (YouTube), Craig Mundie (Microsoft), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Shananu Narayen (Adobe), Hamid Akhvan (T-Mobile) and Eric Clemons (Wharton).

Ridiculously great panel. Did any American newspaper owners attend Davos? I know Jeff Jarvis went to Davos, who else?

The video above and the Podcast below with John Palfry offer great insight into consumer needs and market demands.  Are newspapers adapting appropriately?

From – On The Media – A whole generation of children has grown up connected to the Internet. Berkman Center for Internet & Society director John Palfry calls these kids “digital natives.” Palfrey argues in his book Born Digital that they see the world in a profoundly different way than the rest of us.

Free Advertising Ideas For Newspaper Publishers

In a recent interview Gigaom.com creator Om Malik alluded to a few ideas, which newspapers can use to innovate their online presence.  He jokingly stated that for $25million he’d be happy to dispense his knowledge to the newspaper industry, but not for less.  I work for much less.
