I just wanted to point out something about this quote: "To function, digital devices require a constant flow of electrons that predominately come from the combustion of coal, and at the end of their all-too-short useful lives electronics have become the single largest stream of toxic waste created by man."

The say that all digital devices, and hence eReaders, "require a constant flow of electrons" isn't quite accurate. With the "E Ink" displays, they only need that flow of electrons when the image changes - after the refresh completes, it stays there until the next change is needed.

I don't disagree with the fact that far too much pollution is created from all the electricity being used, but I did want to mention that not all of the eReaders are as bad as the rest of the digital devices (at least, not with regard to power consumption).

Another thing that irks me is that if software code were to be optimized, anything that used such software would be able to get much better performance-per-Watt. (Unfortunately, this would probably mean coding in Assembly Language, so it's nowhere near likely to happen on a large scale.)

Sorry the link is so hidden! AOL Small Business has its own policies regarding track-backs, linking style, number of links, etc. (as do all sites), and they tend to bury them much more than I would normally like to when such great credit is due. I know how labor-intensive interviews are and how much thought and planning goes into them for the interviewer. I am extremely grateful to have found such a wonderfully-done one while researching the paper vs. digital topic, so thank you so much again, Robert! It has certainly inspired me to think a lot more in depth about the future cost of technology if we can't figure out how to reuse what we have more efficiently and make best use of our dwindling natural resources.

I found very much of this article to be unconvincing. Everything pollutes and consumes. Without being quantitative you are saying nothing useful.

Thanks for this great interview with the Godfather of Green Media. I was so inspired that I decided to present the Greenwashing in Media Award to the producers of digital-edition readers. Details are at http://deadtreeedition.blogspot.com/2009/04/greenwashing-media-award-goes-to.html.
