Part two of the best newspaper websites. I continue this post listing my selection for the best news blogs and news aggregators. Without further ado, I give you more good media website examples:
POPURLS – From the site: “popurls is the dashboard for the latest web-buzz, a single page that encapsulates up-to-the-minute headlines from the most popular sites on the internet. Popurls is considered as a gate to a highly selective collection of the most popular sites, presented in a usable way for every device & service.
—————————————————————–
Popurls is great for many reasons but the highlights for me are: 1. Popurls’ navigation and layout are so damn easy. The site is one page. Mouse over text or images for details. That’s it! Scroll to the bottom and your done! 2. Popurls capitalizes on one of the internet’s greatest draws, which is; presenting content in MULTIMEDIA formats. One can find content in the following formats: text, streaming video, video, podcasts, audio clips, social media, microblogging, radio, pictures, photos, etc…
Trendalicious! – From the site: ”trendalicious is a real-time ranking of the 100 most popular web pages as reflected by del.icio.us, digg, and reddit. URLs posted to those sites are collected and ranked by their total number of votes or links”.
Why I think this site is so great? Look at it. Its dead nuts simple. Why not have a newspaper news site with one page like this? Wouldn’t it be a great way of introducing people to your content? Of course it would be. Newspaper execs would say, well how can I monetize a page like that? Easy, you sponsor it. It would be your biggest money maker ON DAY ONE.
The Big Picture – From the site: “The Big Picture is a photo blog for the Boston Globe/boston.com, compiled semi-regularly by Alan Taylor. Inspired by publications like Life Magazine (of old), National Geographic, and online experiences like MSNBC.com’s Picture Stories galleries and Brian Storm’s MediaStorm, The Big Picture is intended to highlight high-quality, amazing imagery – with a focus on current events, lesser-known stories and, well, just about anything that comes across the wire that looks really interesting”.
How did anyone else not think to do this? Telling a news story with HUGE beautiful pictures is great. Judging by the number of comments people leave every day on this site, I’m not the only one who thinks this is a homerun.
The Money Meltdown – From the site: “Goal of this site: I’ve had a lot of difficulty finding sites that pulled together useful, authoritative, and comprehensive information about our current financial crisis in an accessible way. So I thought I’d take a stab at it myself. I hope anyone looking to get up to speed on this crisis can come to the home page and get what they need. Besides the link of the day, nothing on the front page will change too much from day to day, but I will try to keep it relevant, up-to-date and valuable for those looking for more knowledge on the crisis”.
All the news sources in the nation and they couldn’t come up with one cohesive site to help their readers? Leave it to a blogger to inform the nation. You notice he links to news sources right? This should be screaming at publishers that their content is good, but their audience engagement and site experience is poop.
The Huffington Post – is run by about 2 dozen people and is the #20 news source on the internet with 7.491million unique visitors per month! $$Ka-Ching$$ Sure there’s some original content on here, but the big takeaway is that this is a link site. Again reinforcing the notion that newspaper sites have horrible navigation and user experiences.
You always know exactly what is important in the news on huffingtonpost.com The Big Headline and accompanying photo are a direct transformation from an above-the-fold newspaper model. Funny thing is, no newspaper sites do this. Leave it to a blogger. Come on newspaper industry, WTF.
